About me

After many years as a violinist, I finally decided I needed to broaden my creative output. I have always found it impossible to pass by an old “junk shop” without a good rummage around, and with a particular a soft spot for sad and unloved old chairs, upholstery seemed the way to go!

Five years ago my husband treated me to a weekend course with Lucy Brodie at Huntlands Farm in Worcestershire and I was hooked. I have completed the first two stages of training with the Association of Master Upholsterers and Soft Furnishings (AMUSF) with a pass and distinction respectively. I am now finishing my 3rd and final year of training, studying with Steve Franklin in Hereford.

I can offer 3 different levels of upholstery;

Recovering service, where the decorative cover is removed, surface fillings are made good and a new top fabric is attached.

 A refurbishment where the existing fillings and fabrics are partially removed and replaced with new.

Or a complete re-upholstery where the piece is stripped right back to the bare frame then rebuilt using traditional or contemporary methods.

I am trained in both the modern style of re-upholstery, using foam and/or rubberised hair with staples, and the traditional style, using twine, hand sprung springs, black fibre, animal hair, linen scrim and lots and lots of tacks! Usually an older piece is more suited to traditional upholstery techniques, and later pieces, post 1950, to the modern treatment.
